I'm in a Wide Open Space...

The Forum is on its Summer holiday, and won't be back until September. In the meantime there'll be regularly updated things here to keep you thinking and moving forward.

August is a funny month for those of us who work for NYFC: most of our normal activities stop for the Summer as everyone goes off on holiday, and we tend to have a month where we're catching up on paperwork, but with intense weeks like Soul Survivor thrown in too. For instance, today I've been writing letters and fiddling with DVDs - hardly Kingdom-shattering stuff! On Friday I'm off to Living Water where I'll be playing in one of the worship bands, but until then I'm in 'admin mode' - there's nothing urgent to do, so we get on with some of the things we've not had time to do all year. It's a wide open space to work in as there's loads of choice and no particular pressure for a few weeks.

The thing is, it's so easy to end up just wandering around in this space. When things are manic and there's a constant stream of things we tend to just slam from one to the next, with each one getting our (almost) full attention until it's done and we move to the next one. It's easy to stay focussed when you're in that 'narrow' space, circumstance almost dictates the choices and the way of serving God at each moment. In this August space though, we're faced with a huge set of options, and because nothing becomes urgent until the end of the month at the earliest it's often a case of drifting rather than slamming!

What's vital though is that we don't forget THE CALLING while we're in this wide open bit. THE CALLING on NYFC, or on me, or on any of us is the same, and God's still urgent about it, even if we're all feeling a bit relaxed. I need to remind myself that I'm doing this for a reason, and I suspect a lot of people are like me too. Your calling might not be exactly the same as mine, but I know you've got one, so please, just get on with it, even in this wide, open space...

Bonus points in September for anyone who posts on the forum with the musical reference for this article ;)
